What is the scientific definition of addiction?

Addiction is defined as a chronic, recurrent disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences. Addiction is the inability to stop using a substance or engage in behavior even though it is causing psychological and physical harm. Addiction is highly treatable, but such treatment must be based on evidence and best scientific practice. With input from internal and external stakeholders, the Working Group revised the definition of addiction for use in ASAM policy statements.
